Ladysmith police deal with numerous thefts from vehicles

Ladysmith RCMP were kept busy last week as thieves stole from vehicles.

The Ladysmith detachment responded to 49 calls for service from April 21-26.

Saturday, April 21

} On April 21, the Ladysmith RCMP received a report of damage to a fence in the 900 block of Davidson Road. An unknown person had backed into the fence, knocking it down. It is believed this was deliberately done to allow access to the trail system.

Monday, April 23

} On April 23, the Ladysmith RCMP received a report of a break and enter to a vacant residence on Victoria Road. Nothing appears to have been stolen, although items were moved around. There are no suspects in the matter.

} The Ladysmith RCMP received a report of a stolen 1991 black Acura Integra. The vehicle was stolen from an apartment complex parking lot on Dogwood Drive in Ladysmith. The police are continuing their investigation.

} The Ladysmith RCMP received a report of a theft from a vehicle in the 900 block of Third Avenue. A Dodge Dakota was entered, and dog food, coffee and a charger were stolen.

} The Ladysmith RCMP received a report of a motor vehicle accident that had occurred three days earlier. A dark green crew cab pulled in to park beside a Mercedes-Benz on High Street. When the truck pulled in, it damaged the door. Both drivers spoke; however, the male driver of the truck left without exchanging information, as is a requirement.

} The Ladysmith RCMP received a report that some time over the past two days, the battery and cables were cut on a 1999 Subaru Forester, which was parked on the 4000 block of Thicke Road. There are no suspects or witnesses.

} The Ladysmith RCMP received a report that some time over the weekend, a vehicle that had been parked at the Ladysmith Harbour Marina had been entered. An axe and a variety of keys were stolen.

Tuesday, April 24

} The Ladysmith RCMP received a report that three days earlier, a grey Dodge pickup had been entered overnight. A Samsung cell phone, backup warning device, GPS and various tools were stolen.  There are no suspects or witnesses.

} On a positive note, on April 24, members of the Ladysmith RCMP and Ladysmith Citizens on Patrol-Speed Watch program conducted a check stop. Approximately 50 vehicles were checked, and all but one were in compliance and wearing their seatbelts.

} The Ladysmith RCMP received another report of theft from vehicle. Overnight, someone entered a 1993 GMC pickup that had been parked in the carport of a residence at the 13000 block of Wagon Wheel Drive. A variety of tools were stolen, and gas was syphoned from the vehicle. Two other pickups parked on the same property were also entered, but nothing was stolen.

Wednesday, April 25

} The Ladysmith RCMP responded to an accident between a truck and a quad on the Branon Creek Forest Services Road. The driver of a Ford Ranger was traveling down the road when it met a quad heading in the opposite direction as they rounded a corner. The quad slid into the bumper of the truck, with the driver’s leg becoming pinned between the bumper and the quad. The quad driver was transported to the Nanaimo Regional Hospital with a suspected broken leg.
