A 17-year-old Ladysmith youth has been arrested and is facing charges after an alleged threat was made against Chemainus Secondary students using the popular social media app Snapchat.
“In the post, a youth was shown holding a hand gun, later determined to be an air soft gun, and stating something to the effect of ‘Don’t go to school today’,” said Cpl. Tammy Douglas.
Ladysmith RCMP as well as the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are currently investigating.
It’s unclear how many students received the Snapchat message or when it was sent.
RCMP had a visible presence at the school today to provide support and ensure that the students feel safe.
“The RCMP want to remind parents to speak to their kids about the consequences of making threats,” Douglas added. “The safety and security of our children is paramount and these threats are taken very seriously.”
