Open mic nigtht returns to Ladysmith

Ladysmith performers need a venue to show their true colours. That’s what was running through Robin Ramalho’s head when he partnered with In the Bean Time café to do just that.Wednesday, April 27 marked the first edition of open mic night at the café.Ramalho said they were not expecting a packed house, but the place was jammed.“We had everyone from an 89-year-old to a five-year-old get up onstage and play,” said Ramalho.“It was a pretty cool night.”Acts ranged from established acts to some poetry and acapella music.Ramalho used to own a local coffee shop in town that hosted an open mic night and felt it was something the town missed.Ramalho also canvassed local businesses to see if there was anything they’d like to give to the event.“The concept is businesses supporting local musicians and artists and local musicians and artists supporting local business,” said Ramalho.Ramalho said he is going to continue canvassing local businesses during every open mic night to help them promote their merchandise to the crowd.“There’s a need here,” said Ramalho.Ramalho said there is few chances to expose kids to music in Ladysmith. Normally a parent would have to take their kids to other cities for musical diversity.“This is a great opportunity for local kids to be exposed to music,” he said, adding attendees also get the chance to talk to each other, swap experiences and learn new things. The open mics will be held every other Wednesday, the next one slated for May 11. Sign up starts at 5 p.m. and the performances begin at 6 p.m. The forum wraps up at 9 p.m.For more information or to sign up even earlier, check out At the Bean Time’s Facebook page.
