Students decorate downtown Ladysmith for annual Love project

Art gallery partners with schools to craft hand-painted hearts

The Ladysmith Waterfront Art Gallery partnered with North Oyster School and Stz’uminus Primary School to decorate downtown with painted hearts. Students painted the hearts, made by local woodworker Steen Hjort and families helped hang them from trees in downtown Ladysmith on Jan. 31.

The gallery also partnered with the Ladysmith Downtown Business Association and will display poems from students and local poets at the Royal LePage window on First Avenue.

Camille Paradis, a teacher at North Oyster School, said students and staff were excited about the project. She estimated there were between 200–300 hearts to be displayed.

“[It was] challenging to balance the paint with all of the energetic fingers,” she said, but added, “it was a very positive energy around the experience.”

She said lots of parents wanted to come help hang the hearts, which was a good opportunity since they have not had a lot of chances to participate in school events during the pandemic.
