Two candidates have put their names forward for next month's Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools board trustee byelection.
Joan Brown, Snuneymuxw First Nation chief administrative officer, from Cedar, and Tim Harris, Kw'umut Lelum Step Up program team leader and former Stz'uminus council member, from Ladysmith, will be vying for the vacant spot at the board table.
The Sept. 14 byelection became necessary after Charlene McKay tendered her resignation in May.
The school district released the names of prospective trustees Friday, Aug. 9, once the nomination period ended. Campaigning begins Saturday, Aug. 17 and opportunities for early voting will take place on various dates between Sept. 4-13, stated the school district website. General election day is Sept. 14 with voting at McGirr Elementary, Ladysmith Secondary and Cedar Secondary schools, as well as the school district's administration office.
The school board named Mark Walsh, district secretary-treasurer, as chief electoral officer in June.
The most recent school district byelection occurred in January 2022, when Naomi Bailey, current board vice-chairperson, was elected with approximately 1,100 ballots cast. That byelection cost $44,500 and the district is expecting a similar cost for this byelection.
