Island Health has declared a new COVID-19 outbreak in long-term care at the Chemainus Health Care Centre.

Two resident cases have been identified related to this outbreak. The declaration is only for the Harbour Side unit and does not affect the rest of the Chemainus Health Care Centre.

“The Chemainus Health Care Centre is not affected by this outbreak and people should not avoid seeking care if they need it,” Island Health advised in a media release.

Cases have been confirmed via PCR testing or a follow-up from Island Health’s case and contact management team.

Response protocols have been implemented at the site following the outbreak, including: essential and single designated visitor visits will continue; no congregate dining or group activities; staff movement will be limited wherever possible; enhanced cleaning and infection control measures will continue; patients, families and staff are being notified; and enhanced screening of all staff and patients for symptoms.

Island Health is supporting the site with any further actions required and to answer questions from staff, patients and family members.
