January 1958 - July 2022 ~
On Monday July 25th 2022, Debbie lost her life in a tragic car accident in Saskatchewan on her way to a family reunion in Toronto, Ontario (64). The sudden loss of her life has devastated her family.
Debbie was born in Toronto, Ontario to her parents William and Yvonne Pettit.
She spent most of her young life in Etobicoke and graduated from Mimico High School. In her late 20's Debbie moved to Kelowna BC to start a family, welcoming her two daughters to the world.
After her father's passing, Debbie traveled back to Toronto to attend his funeral. It was during this time that she rekindled her love with her highschool sweetheart, Gerry. They moved their families to Vancouver Island to start a new life together in Ladysmith BC.
On February 14th 1997, Gerry and Debbie were the first people to be married on a BC ferry, traveling to Gabriola Island.
Debbie had a wonderfully kind, bubbling personality, filled with an unforgettable laugh and tremendous compassion. She was an extremely hard working and dedicated mother. When her kids were small she volunteered for the Ladysmith RCMP before getting a job at a local hardware store where she met great life-long friends. Always industrious, she later began her own cleaning company "trying to leave a little sparkle wherever she went." It kept her busy from the early mornings to late afternoons where she would return home to look after her family and their hobby farm that consisted of two dogs, three cats, twenty-four chickens, two pigs, and eight turkeys. Her hard work kept her family happy and fed.
Shortly after buying their forever home in Cedar BC, Debbie suffered a brain aneurysm and stroke, changing her life forever and confining her to a wheelchair. Through those tough years Debbie never gave up hope. She was always happy and spreading her positive words to anyone who needed them.
Debbie enjoyed the sunshine and the outdoors, spending most of her remaining years 4x4-ing her wheelchair through Hemer Park, traveling with her husband around the island and playing with all her wonderful grandchildren that brought a new light to her life. She loved them deeply with all her heart.
She leaves behind her mother Yvonne Pettit, her beloved husband of 25 years Gerry Cook, her two daughters Richelle Walker (Thomas, Howard and Malcolm), Leah McDougall (Murray, Alice, Grace and Lawson), her step children Lisa Cook (Bryan and Xander), Gerry Cook III (Gerry and Caitlin), Megan Sabean (Chris), Anthony Cook (deceased), and all her step grandchildren.
The family wants to personally thank the Regina General Hospital Trauma & Burn Unit, the Pasqua Coroners Office, and the Victoria Avenue Funeral Home in Regina for all their care and support during this difficult time. They all made the impossible possible.
A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held on Saturday, September 24th 2022 at the North Oyster Community Center from 2:00-4:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC SPCA for Debbie's passion of rescuing animals.
