May 9, 1943 - September 9, 2024
In loving memory ~
It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Doreen Richards, 81, on Monday, September 9th at Cowichan District Hospital. Doreen was born in Regina, Sk on May 9, 1943 and spent her growing up years in Edmonton. She married Len (predeceased) in 1963 and enjoyed a full married life in Edmonton, Lac la Biche, and Calgary before retiring to Chemainus, B.C. She is survived by her two children, Debbie (Daryll) and Randy; three grandchildren, Justin (Alex), Chad, & Kendra (Ryan); and three great grandchildren, Emerson, Blayke & Zayden. Doreen is also survived by two siblings, Brian (Karen) & Carol (Robin); and two nieces and one nephew.
Doreen had a spirited nature & was a student of life, living life to its fullest. She had a sharp mind and kept abreast of current world affairs, politics & sports, with hockey & f1 racing being two of her favourites. She had a love of the outdoors and over the years engaged in many adventurous activities that included dirt biking, scuba diving, snorkelling, camping & fishing. She was an avid homemaker picking berries for jams & jellies and canning pickles & vegetables from her garden. Doreen's working career led her to the accounting departments of Riley & McCormick Western Wear and Crane Supply in Calgary. Upon her retirement, she moved to the island with Len, a lifelong dream they both shared.
Doreen's life was rich and with purpose. She spent many years enjoying Mexico with Len, friends, and family, immersing herself in Mexican culture with a helping hand. Doreen was involved with the Chemainus Red Hatters & the Pearls Quilting Club, creating beautiful quilts that were enjoyed by family & various charities.
When physical limitations finally prevented her from pursuing these many passions, she could be seen gardening, touring her beloved island, handpicking crab from the docks, and celebrating the end of her day with a Timmy's iced cappuccino.
Anything Doreen endeavoured to do, she did passionately. She will be dearly missed. In accordance with her wishes, Doreen will be cremated and end-of-life will remain private.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Cowichan District Hospital who cared for Doreen during her failing health.
If friends desire, memorial tributes can be made to the B.C. SPCA Cowichan Branch.
