October 11, 2019
Doug passed away peacefully on October 11, 2019 at the age of 71 with his family by his side. Doug was born in Ladysmith, BC and grew up in Saltair where he continued to reside for most of his life. Doug valued hard work and being able to provide for those dear to him. He was proud to have started working at the age of nine picking berries, later haying on a local farm and working at Sam Yee's Grocery throughout his teenage years. Doug, after graduating from Chemainus Secondary, started longshoring at age 18. He retired at 60 after 42 years with local 508, which included 22 years on the waterfront; and 20 years in the office where he worked as a 2nd dispatcher before moving up to dispatcher and secretary treasurer.
Doug was a homebody and enjoyed the simple things in life. He was very proud of his children Paula and Doug and was often heard teasing his 'bonehead' grandchildren and their partner in crime Dar; his infectious loud laughter will forever ring in our ears. Doug enjoyed hunting trips with his brothers, good friends and especially his son Doug. Many an early morning was spent casting a line into Fuller Lake and later at his favourite spot sharing coffee and conversation with friends.
He charmed the love of his life Karen with his respectful, honest, and caring manner. After a period of dating that included cruising in Doug's Road Runner and skating at the newly built Fuller Lake Arena, they were married and blessed with two beautiful children.
Doug is predeceased by daughter Paula Hayer; parents Bill and Betty Wright; brother Bill Wright and sister Bonnie de Leeuw; father in-law Jack Kernachan; brother-in-law John Kernachan. Family and friends describe Doug as a man of true integrity and are forever grateful for his unconditional love and support.
We are saddened yet blessed with memories that will provide comfort and strength. He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife Karen; son Doug (Darlene) Wright, and grandchildren Dom, Daisy, Dru and Dannaka; son-in-law Sarb (Sarah) Hayer and grandsons Nirmal and Rajan; brothers Dan (Fran) Wright and Don (Lynda) Wright; brother-in-law Tom de Leeuw; mother-in-law Irene Kernachan; sister-in-laws Cathy (Henry) de Wit, Jayne Kernachan, Marjorie Garside(John Kernachan) and Lorna (Gary Reinstein) and the many other extended family.
Our Family is grateful for the care and empathy provided by Dr. Broere, Dr. Morris, Dr. Manhas and the nurses at Cowichan District Hospital.
