Betty was born in 1922 in Salmon Arm, shortly after her twin brother Robert, to William and Florence Kernaghan. She trained as a nurse at St. Eugene's Hospital in Cranbrook and married Harry Betts in 1950. They raised 8 children, Barbara (Keven), Linda (Paul), Shirley, Patricia, Allan, Yvonne, Evelyn (Percy), and Robert.
They moved to Vancouver Island in 1979 settling first in Saltair, then Chemainus, Ladysmith, and finally Cedar. Betty loved her large extended family and many friends who loved her in return for her kindness and generosity.
She died in hospital in Creston on September 22 after a fall while visiting family. She was predeceased by her parents and brothers Bob and Bill; and survived by her husband of 59 years, her children, and grandchildren Natalie (Alex), Lauren, Brianna and Spencer Tipping; Joey and Tina Betts, and Adam Spottiswood.
Her family will be forever grateful to the nurses of Creston Hospital for their tender care during her last days.
A memorial service will be held Friday October 2, 2009 at 3 pm, Cedar United Church, 1644 Cedar Road.
