In loving memory ~
MARTINDALE, Elizabeth Marrion (Betty) passed away peacefully in Chemainus on February 20, 2025 at the age of 86. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. Predeceased in 1990 by her beloved husband George Henry Leslie Martindale (Marty); she will be lovingly remembered by her sister Lorraine Harrison and her nieces Nicole Iezzi and Cheryl Harrison (goddaughter); and her very large extended family on her husband's side including Donna Thorpe, Richard Gibbs, Carol Ann Dart, and Valerie Allen.
Betty was born on October 5, 1938, in Dunstable, Alberta to John Harrison and Loretta Harrison nee Jansen. She was very close to her father and was deeply saddened when he passed away in 1987. Her sister, Lorraine, lives in Okanagan Falls. She and her sister were very close and kept in contact through letters. Lorraine and her family had occasion to spend summer holidays in Chemainus creating heartfelt memories. Betty and Marty were married on July 21, 1967, and enjoyed a loving 23 years together. They operated Marty's Meat Market and upon retirement travelled frequently to the southern United States. Marty was the love of her life and she selflessly cared for him when he became ill.
Betty graduated on March 2, 1960, from the Edmonton General Hospital Registered Nurses program. It was a three-year live-in program which forged strong ties with her classmates. In September 2010, the class celebrated their 50th Anniversary in Camrose, Alberta. Although a small class, they remained close throughout the years. Betty was a tireless volunteer in her community. She was a lifetime member of the Chemainus Health Care Auxiliary. She worked in the Thrift Shop every other Saturday morning and served tea in the Health Care Centre on Friday afternoons. She began as a driver for Meals on Wheels, later becoming co-chair and then chair of the committee. In July 2020, she retired from the Auxiliary after 29 years of devoted service. She also served as a canvasser for the Cancer Society.
Betty was a devoted member of the parish at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church. Her faith was very important to her, as was her church family. She performed many tasks in the church and is most remembered for her extraordinary skill as a greeter.
Thank you to Dr. Broere and the staff of the Steeples and the Chemainus Health Care Centre for her care. Additionally, thanks to Father Jose and the Pastoral Care team at Saint Joseph's for their comforting visits with Betty.
