BIBBS, Herbert John

Born 1915 in Govan, Saskatchewan

Herbert John Bibbs was a loving and loyal husband, father and grandfather. He died peacefully at Nanaimo General Hospital on September 10th at the young age of 93 years. He married his wife Betty on September 8th, 1939 and together they celebrated 69 years of marriage, had four children and eight grandchildren. He started his employment experience with the CPR, traveling between Vancouver and Calgary during his summers while attending university. He enjoyed working on the trains and regaled his family with many interesting stories. Herbert also served in the army during World War II as an engineer and was stationed in Great Britain for four years. After the war, he returned to university and enrolled in the School of Theology at the University of British Columbia. As an ordained Anglican minister, Herbert was assigned parishes in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. During his youth and encompassing thirty years, Herbert was an active member of the Scouting movement. He also had a love of sports, enthusiastically encouraging his family in athletics such as swimming, soccer, baseball, grass hockey, rugby, football and even horses! In Herbert's eyes, his family all had Olympic potential.

He will also be remember for his love of politics. As a devoted socialist and loyal member of the New Democratic Party, he looked forward to every election. He was in his element when given the opportunity to debate! Over the course of many years during both federal and provincial elections there were many sightings of an orange mini painted up and laded with NDP signs driving around Nanaimo and Ladysmith. The owner of that vehicle was Herbert

Herbert will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. He had a huge presence and was an extremely generous individual. We are all thankful for the time we had with him.
