passed away peacefully with his family at his side on August 3, 2005 at the age of 77 years in the Ladysmith and District Hospital.
Matti was born January 9, 1928 in Routio, Finland. He married Sanni May 13, 1951. Matti and Sanni then immigrated to Canada and spent all their 54 years together in Ladysmith, B.C. Matti enjoyed is life in
Canada, especially his family, his job as head sawyer at the Chemainus Sawmill, fishing, dancing, playing cribbage, playing pool and mingling with his friends. Matti is survived by his wife Sanni, daughters: Raija (Wilf) Williams, Irene (Ivan) Pye, Anita (Mark) Nivala, grandchildren: Lenna (Christopher) Pittinger, Glen Williams, Devon
Grouhel, Alison Grouhel; his nephew in Nanaimo Arvo (Joyce) Paivarinta, also 3 sisters in Finland: Mirjam (Esko) Telus, Taimi Turra, Asta (Valdi) Liias as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial Service was held on Monday, August 8, 2005 at 1:00 pm in the Ladysmith Eagle’s Hall. Rev. Jukka Joensuu officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Emmaus
