May 29, 1931 - February 14, 2021
John Herbert (Bert) Morgan passed away peacefully at Eden Gardens in Nanaimo, BC on Feb 14, 2021 at the age of 89.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Jean Morgan in 1985, and is survived by his wife Lynne Morgan, his children John (Louise), Sandra (Alvin) and Herb, his grandchildren Emily, Sophie, Tristan, Braeden and Audrey, his step-children Madelon (David) and Bruce (Renate) and Lynne's grandchildren Christopher, William, Spencer, John, Keisha, Zachary and Adele, who will all miss him as well as nieces and nephews from both sides of the family.
Bert was born in New Westminster on May 29, 1931 and grew up in Ladysmith, the son of a coal miner and Mason. After high school he attended UBC, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (1953), and later a Master of Education (1961).
Bert spent his working career in education, and he was a passionate supporter of the public education system. After his B.A., he returned to Ladysmith to teach History and Latin and became Vice Principal during his tenure at Ladysmith High. He moved on to the Cowichan School District in 1970 to take on administrative positions in the district, relocating the family to Duncan in 1973, and retired as Superintendent in 1989.
After retirement Bert and Lynne remained in Duncan for a few years, before moving to Nanaimo where they lived on the harbour.
Bert loved to travel, fish and enjoyed watching sports, especially basketball, football and hockey, playing the former during his younger years. He was very proud of the fact that both he and his youngest son Herb competed in the BC High School Basketball championships, 30 years apart. Some of the happiest family memories were summers spent at the Seaview cabins in Saltair when his children were young.
Thank you to the staff from Nanaimo Travellers Lodge and Eden Gardens for caring for Bert in his later years. He will be missed and remembered by all that knew him. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Salvation Army in his memory.
