Joyce Frankland SHAW,

March 22, 2005

Born in London, England, February 6, 1923. Joyce passed away on March 22 at Seaside Lodge in Ladysmith, BC.

Her early years in England were highlighted by her participation in Junior Wimbledon, her gutsy service as an ambulance driver during “The Blitz” and her time as a nurse at Queen Victoria Cottage Hosptial for the “Guinea Pigs”, burn victims of the war. She followed her heart and her husband, Ted, to Canada and became an expert at moving as the Navy transferred them from coast to coast. Finally settling in the Cowichan Valley after Ted’s retirement, Joyce spent countless hours as a volunteer for the Hosptial Auxiliary and the I.O.D.E. She and Ted enjoyed many happy winters in their condo on Maui and summers playing golf, bridge and croquet with their friends in Duncan. During her final years, as she battled with cancer, Joyce’s true character shone through-determined and selfless, buoyed up by her indomitable sense of humour.

Special thanks to granddaughter Nicola, Dr. Manny Fritsch and Wendy Couwenberg for their dedicated care when Joyce needed it the most. Joyce is survived by

sisters Jean and Sheila and brother Tony in England, by daughters Susan Wakefield and Penny Cameron and their families in Canada. At Joyce’s request, there will be no service but the family invited all who knew Joyce to join them for a glass of scotch at Page Point Inn, Ladysmith, BC, on Friday, April 1. Please direct any donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice.
