Helene Kinney passed away peacefully in her room at The Lodge on Fourth, Ladaysmith, on June 2 in her 101st year. She leaves to mourn her two sons: Ron (Shirley) and Dr. Gary (Vicky), five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Gould in 1988.

Helene was a well-known and loved resident at the Lodge, and her ability to appear happy and content endeared her to staff and visitors alike. All her life she had a large bevy of friends, and an amazing impact wherever she lived. Over the course of more than 60 years, she resided in six Canadian provinces. Born in Southport, England, she immigrated with her mother and brother to Burnaby, BC in 1912, to join her father who had come two years earlier. The family sailed on the Empress of Canada, which left England one week after the ill-fated Titanic.

Throughout her life Helene was an avid sportswoman, who played golf, tennis, badminton, curling, and lawn bowling, and was an interested fan of hockey, lacrosse, and soccer. When she was a teen, she was a tennis champion. She was a very good bridge player for most of her life. She was also very good with her hands, doing shell work, knitting, petit-point, and crochet work. As a volunteer, she excelled, giving to organizations of her choice tremendous drive and enthusiasm which won her the respect of all. She was trained as a teacher, and followed this profession several times during her life.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday June 21, 2008 at 11:30 AM. in Telford's Ladysmith Chapel. 112 French St. Rev. W. James officiating. Arrangements by:
