Mary Audrey
Passed away at Sea Vista Manor, Chemainus, B.C. on May 8, 2003 at the age of 99. Audrey was predeceased by her husband Edmond and survived by her son Murray (Donna) Hess of Chemainus, grandchildren: Janice (Ron) Povey of Nanaimo, Keith (Jacquie) Hess of Clearbrook, B.,C., Scott (Debbie) Hess of Chemainus, and great grandchildren: Leah, Ryan, Andrea, Julia, Gregory, Devon, Kelsy and Lynsey, also numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Born Mary Audrey Norma McLeod on November 6, 1903 in Vancouver, B.C. Her parents Wm. Henry McLeod and Margaret Jane Crawford were Vancouver pioneers. Audrey attended Lord Selkirk School in Cedar Cottage, graduated normal school and became the first teacher on Herling Island, Cheam View, Chilliwack, B.C. There she met Edmond Hess. They were married in Spokane, Washington and had 65 years together. Their son Murray was born in Montana. Later they returned to Cheam View and then Vancouver, coming to Chemainus in 1948. Audrey was a dedicated and devoted founding member of the United Church in Chemainus, where she taught Sunday school and was president of W.M.S. and U.C.W. Audrey belonged to the sketch group, the toastmistress’ club the Mt. Brenton Golf Club, and the Seniors’ Centre where she was a founding member. Audrey did meals-on-wheels and belonged to the Hospital Auxiliary. She was an untiring volunteer, an asset to her community and a true Christian in every sense. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Special thanks to Marie and Claude Burroughs of Sea Vista Manor for their compassionate care, patience and friendliness shown towards Audrey and making her feel like one of the family. A memorial service will be held on Sunday,. March 18, 2003 at 3:00 pm in the Chemainus United Church. Rev. Michelle Slater officiating.
