Mary Van Rooyen (Maria, Mies, Oma) Passed away at her home in Crofton, with family by her side on Monday February 1st 2021, at the age of 82. Mary is predeceased by her loving husband Chris and survived by her four children Eric (Teresa) of Sidney, Carla (Erik) of Norway, Marijke (Carl) of Crofton, Loyola (Garth) of New Zealand and her adored grandchildren: Ryan (Brehanna), Kevin (Nathalie), Aaron (Jackie), Cory (Daphne), Bryn (Mike), Karl (Ashley), Kris, Tor (Tori), Tyler (Katie), Jayse (Josh), Hahlay, Nicholas and her 13 great grandchildren; as well as her sister in Quesnel, her brother and sisters in the Netherlands: Chris's family, nieces and nephews.
Mary was born in Haarlem, Netherlands on February 24th 1938, and later immigrated with her husband and young family landing in Vancouver and traveling to Quesnel, BC, not speaking a word of English.
Mary was a wonderful stay at home mother her first few years in Canada and then worked alongside her husband at their family business. After enduring several very cold winters in Quesnel the family traveled to Vancouver Island on a summer holiday and never left, moving to Duncan.
At that time, Mary and Chris started their family business at J&C Wrought Iron Shops Ltd. and moved the family to Crofton where they became a vibrant part of the community. After retiring from their business, Mary and Chris moved to Parksville where Mary continued to work at a retirement home.
In later years, Mary and Chris moved back to Ladysmith where she became a proud member of the Catholic Women's League and an avid member at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Three years ago, Mary wished to be closer to family and moved back to Crofton. Living with Marijke and Carl.
These years were very full and happy for Mary and she enjoyed many family moments with her children and grandchildren. She was so content to be surrounded by her loving family. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, Oma(Gammy), and friend.
Mary was very active her whole life and enjoyed hiking in many places and was always happiest when surrounded by her loving family. Her great zest for life and sense of adventure will be sadly missed. A private service will be held on Tuesday, February 9th 2021 followed by her burial at Cedar Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations in memory of Mary Van Rooyen to KidsSport Canada.
