BATTIE, RAYMOND

Aug. 8, 1921 - Sep. 28, 2009

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Raymond Battie on Monday, September 28, 2009 at the Lodge on 4th, Ladysmith, BC.

Ray was born in Ladysmith and lived his entire life here.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Grace (Pan) 1998; great-granddaughter Melissa 1992; and parents Tom and Elsie Battie, brother Tom (Tuber) and sister Audrey.

The lifelong devoted Montreal Canadians fan is survived by his loving daughter Nadine (Babe), who was his pride and joy; grandsons Ray (Cindy), Tony, and Dean, who share many wonderful memories of Gramps including how he taught them to drink out of the creek; great-grandsons Tyler and Trevor who could always count on him cheering them on in every baseball and hockey game they played in; and he loved his visits from his great-granddaughters Mackenzie and Jessica; and his son-in-law Laurie Read, brother Ab (Lil), and sister-in-law Irene (Nini).

An accomplished athlete in his younger days, Ray participated with local teams at a championship level in softball and basketball, and in 1932 he won a provincial crown in boxing.

He was a great source of tidbits about Ladysmith's history and was very proud of his hometown and his heritage. He retired in 1982 from a lifelong career in logging with Crown Zellerbach.

The family wishes to extend our heartfelt gratitude and thanks for the wonderful, loving care Gramps received from the staff of the Lodge on 4th.

A private graveside service was held on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Ladysmith Cemetery.
