Robert Allan Grant

Robert Allan Grant

November 25th, 1929 – May 21st 2009

Born in Vancouver, B.C. in 1929 to George and Dorothy Grant, Bobs early years were spent between Vancouver and Sproat Lake as the Great Depression limited employment opportunities in the City. Bob graduated from Lord Bing High School in 1948 and soon after hitch hiked around Europe , an adventure highlighted by sleeping outside Buckingham Palace the night before Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation. Dad lived a full life in West Coast Style with gardening and sailing being two of his passions. Dad was a hands-on sort of guy who worked hard all his life both in business and at home. A watchmaker by trade, Bob was creative and resourceful and brought new life to many a vintage timepiece during his 50+years in the business. He began his career working for Woodwards both in Vancouver and Victoria. Bob married Nita in Victoria and welcomed their two daughters into the world a few years later. Bob & Nita were both very active with Royal Victoria Yacht Club. The Grants relocated their family to Ladysmith in the early 1970’s and a few years later joined the local business community where he participated actively for many years. Bob continued to be selfemployed until his sudden passing last Thursday. Dad valued his family, his friends, camaraderie and enjoying life. He was unassuming and authentic, and was motivated by what he could give. Children were drawn to his heartfelt nature. A man ahead of his time, part of what motivated Dad as a young man to become a watch maker was the vision of working from home, to spend time with his family. A quiet and private man, a kind, respectful and supportive father, dad lived and let live. Predeceased by his parents and older sister Margaret, Bob is survived by his wife Nita, daughters Kirsty (Devon) and Robyn (Trevor), grandsons Alexander and Dane, 6 special nieces and nephews as well as family members and good friends both locally and abroad. Dad will be greatly missed by all and Friday evenings will never be the same for Barry & Roy. Bob had been very busy over the years travelling and happily marking items off his own personal ‘Bucket List’ making epic journeys he had dreamed of and continuing his love of sailing and gardening until his last days. A faithful Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow, he lived by the 4-way test and devoted a great deal of his time to Rotary projects over the past 30 years. Donations may be made in Bob’s name to the Rotary Club of Ladysmith. The family wishes to especially thank Dr. Julian Lisinski for his many years of diligent care. Celebration of Life for Robert Allan (Bob) Grant will be Saturday, May 30th, 2009 3-5pm at the Ladysmith Yacht Club.

Please join us in celebrating the life of a wonderful man who touched the lives of many. The celebration is planned to honour Bob and to this end-no neckties please. Please bring stories and memories to share.
