NICKS-SHIRLEY GRACE (GOULD)

Aug 1, 1937 – Dec 27, 2007

Passed away peacefully in Nanaimo General Hospital surrounded by her family. Shirley graduated Ladysmith Senior Secondary School and moved to Victoria where she trained to be a nurse at Royal Jubilee Hospital. In Victoria, she met her husband Thomas Nicks. They then moved to Winnipeg where they had their daughter Sharon, then moved to Ocean Falls where they gave birth to their son Gary. They returned to Ladysmith to raise their family as her ancestors did when they first settled in the area during its early days. She was very active in softball and badminton, playing in community teams and traveling to tournaments. As the kids were growing up, Shirley was very active in the community of Ladysmith. She served two terms as Ladysmith town councilor as well as sitting on the Ladysmith Hospital Board. She was a very active organizer in the political campaigns for various MLA's and MP's. Shirley will always be remembered for her tenacity, laughter, stubbornness, thoughtfulness and humor, as well as her unwavering love of her family and community. She is survived by her daughter Sharon (Ed Bricker) and her son Gary (Katharine and Joseph Gosselin) Nicks, her brother Mickey (Lorraine) Gould and her grandson, Chase Bricker. Donations in her memory can be made to the Ladysmith Hospital Auxiliary. A celebration of Shirley's life will be held January 26, 2008 at the Eagles Hall in Ladysmith. 2-4 pm.
