HORNER, Wilfred Haines

Jan 27, 1923 – Jul 14, 2016

Born on the island of Montserrat in the West Indies, Wilf travelled to school in England at the age of 12, and stayed until the outbreak of World War Two. He then joined the British Army and served in Trinidad, guarding the oil refineries.

After starting his family in Trinidad, Wilf first worked in British Guyana and then moved the family to Canada in 1952. He was one of the first employees at Trans Mountain Pipeline in Vancouver, working in Human Resources.

Wilf remarried in 1967 and after retiring in 1981 moved to the Cowichan Valley, where he lived for 35 years where he particularly cherished the springtime froggy chorus and the birds in his garden.

Wilf was an avid sailor and was happiest out on the water. He also loved to travel, particularly to the Leeward Islands of Montserrat and Nevis, where his brother lived for many years, and to England.

Wilf will be greatly missed by his children, Richard, Patrick, Michael, Lesley and Frances, by his eight grandchildren and by Charmian, his wife of 49 years. He was sadly predeceased by his daughter Susan, and his younger brother Tony.

Our thanks go to the kind staff of the Lodge on 4th in Ladysmith, who cared for him for the last year of his life.

There will be no funeral, at Wilf’s request, however in lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the BC Cancer Agency or a charity of your choice.
