Hammersley, William Roy (Roy) of Chemainus, BC died Sunday, February 21, 2010 at home peacefully in his sleep. He was born in Preston, England on March 7th, 1941 and grew up in Croston, England. He will be remembered by Amy his wife of 46 years, daughter Christine (Angus), son Vincent, brother Michael (Anne), nephew Kevin (Sian), niece Karen (Matt), and many other relatives and friends in Canada, England, and elsewhere... wherever he travelled.
Roy apprenticed as an electrician in England before migrating to Saltair in 1967, where Amy had relatives. Roy worked many years servicing various mills on Vancouver Island before he and Amy exercised their entrepreneurial spirit in starting and running several alarm and security system businesses.
Roy and Amy loved to travel. Trailering down to California and Disneyland several times, motor home vacations down South and across Canada, and in recent year’s trips to Halifax, Barbados, and Jamaica.
Roy loved to build things, including a camper, his own house in Saltair along with additions, plus numerous outbuildings from playhouses to chicken coops. He was always there to help with renovation projects and was constantly involved in projects to make their house in Chemainus more inviting to the always welcome visitors.
Roy and Amy along with Vincent and Lesley loved the challenge of catching prawns and crabs rewarded with beer and poutine at the Thetis Island Pub. Other pastimes included being a member of the “Digger’s” collecting past treasures, researching their value, and selling them on so new ones could be acquired.
A celebration of Roy’s life will be held at Mt. Brenton Golf Course in Chemainus on Wed. March 3rd from 2:00pm – 4:00pm. Please bring your memories of Roy along to share with everyone. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice.
