Vancouver Island's west raincoast has the small 2.68 per cent of the remaining old growth trees, which are threatened by logging despite commitment to preserve them, which has resulted only in deferment.
Those people who protested this were served a court injunction and removed from the site. Since then we have heard little about these events.
Selective logging and conservation could save these trees, thousand of years old, some with trunk diameters of 12 feet. As well as being impressive ornaments to our forests, like all trees they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen into our air. All of us should question our election candidates about their position on these valuable trees.
