Ladysmith's Rhythm Dance Academy preps for Cowichan Music Festival

Rhythm Dance Academy is holding its 2nd annual showcase this Friday at the Ladysmith Secondary School.

Rhythm Dance Academy is hosting its 2nd Annual Solo and Duet Showcase on Friday, at Ladysmith Secondary School - the only opportunity each year to see the local talent perform in town.

Twenty-eight local dancers from Rhythm Dance Academy will be on stage performing their solos and duets in front of a sold out crowd.

The Feb. 3 show in preparation for the 68th annual Cowichan Music Festival competition later this month.

‘The Showcase is a great opportunity for the dancers to get a feel for performing solo on stage, in front of a supportive and friendly audience, before the Music Festival’s adjudicated competition.’ said Elise Samson, owner and artistic director.

Following last year’s showcase, Samson’s dancers went on to receive XXX First Place awards and XX Second Place awards, as well as a variety of awards for individual dancers at the Cowichan competition.

Ella Van Horne has danced with the academy for the past four years and said she looks forward to the showcase.

‘The showcase is a fun evening of bonding with the other dancers, and I like getting the chance to perform in front of my friends and family in Ladysmith,” she said.

The event is also acts as a fundraiser for the academy, which will be travelling to New York in July.

It will be an opportunity to dance on Broadway.

Part of the proceeds are also going towards dancer bursaries.

Rhythm Dance Academy is located in downtown Ladysmith on High Street and offers classes in ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap and hip hop.

Over 75 dancers, ages 3-17, from the town and surrounding areas dance at the academy.
