The latest round of Snowmageddon officially descended upon Ladysmith and the surrounding area early Wednesday afternoon, bringing with it hazardous winter conditions.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning until after midnight and has forecast anywhere from five to 20 cm of snow depending on the area of the Island.

"As the warm air establishes itself, there will be a good chance of freezing rain followed by significant rainfall overnight and into Thursday," the weather agency said in a statement.

"The transition to rain is expected earliest along the immediate coast. Further inland, snow will persist longer and the risk of freezing rain will increase."

The heaviest amount of snowfall, which initiated over Northwest Washington, is expected later this evening.

Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
