Ladysmith Secondary School’s Senior Girls team won both their playoff games at the AA Soccer Provincial Championships in Nelson to finish ninth for the second year in a row.

“Overall it was a great to be there again for a second year in a row - not a lot of schools do that,” said coach Kathleen Nicholls.

LSS earned a 0-0 draw with South Kamploops in regulation time with 9th place on the line.

With the team’s starting goalie injured, Shae Battie made a big save in the shootout as Ladysmith’s Mary Nicholls, Georgia Nicholls, Amber Swithin and Olivia Mazurenko sent the ball into the twine.

“Most teams don’t like going to (penalty kicks) but we’ve got some girls who really love to take them,” Nicholls said. “It was definitely an exciting win.”

Ladysmith got off to a strong start at the tournament last Thursday blanking Kamloop’s Valleyview Secondary 2-0. The girls then reached a 0-0 draw against Archbishop Carney of Port Coquitlam - the eventual winner in Pool C and fourth overall.

Notre Dame Secondary then slipped by Ladysmith 2-1 in the final match of pool play on Friday morning. That team eventually finished 7th.

Haven Bouma notched four goals as Ladysmith easily topped J. Lloyd Crowe Secondary 5-1 in their first playoff game.

The team was made up of players from Grade 8 through to Grade 12.

“It was definitely a good learning experience because we do have quite a few young girls who haven’t been to this kind of competition before,” Nicholls said.
