The Wheelchair Rugby Club, which practices out of the Frank Jameson Community Centre, is holding a fundraiser for a new covered utility trailer.
The trailer will help the touring athletes save money and get to their games. It will also go towards gym rental costs.
“We can pack our equipment up,” event co-ordinator, Julie Hall, said. “Right now everyone is in individual vehicles.”
The team has separate wheelchairs to play in that take up quite a bit of space.
Hall said she hopes they raise at least $3,000.
There will be hotdogs, baked goods and a garage sale. There will also be a rugby game demonstration. “Everyone able bodied is encouraged to hop in a chair and participate,” she said.
She said the team is really excited by the fundraiser.
“It’s also really good for community awareness and to have some fun,” she said.
The team travels to the mainland for games and up and down the Island for practice.
The fundraiser is May 7 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Home Hardware parking lot in Duncan.
