Ladysmith Waterfront Gallery is ringing in 2017 with a show that challenged artists to create new works of art from a limited colour palette.

“It just seems like a good time to encourage people to paint forward,” said curator Leona Petrak.

The theme selected by gallery members for this month’s show is 4 Colours + White.

“It’s a challenge for painters who are intermediate or advanced because quite often painters like to use a full spectrum of colour,” Petrak said. “It’s a supportive venue for people who are just beginning because it limits them and then they don’t have to make a lot of decisions.”

But the show not only includes painters but also glass artists, sculptors, woodturners, printermakers and even poet-painters.

Members have been creating their artwork for the show since September and approximately 60 pieces on are currently on display through to Jan. 22.

“Because we do have basically two shows a month it’s just an encouragement for people to continue to drop in because there’s always something new going on,” Petrak said.
