Improv is unique in that if someone sees a performance, that’s it – there will never be another show exactly like it again. Improv is different every time.
Community members have the opportunity to see one-of-a-kind performances this week, Nov. 23-25, featuring Ladysmith Secondary School’s award-winning improv group. The team is hosting ‘Improvable 28: Myths and Legends’ three straight nights at LSS.
This past spring, the local troupe of students garnered a bronze medal at the Canadian Improv Games national championships after previously capturing the Island title.
This year more than 30 teens are part of the troupe.
“This band of youths is hugely into the art. They just love how they can create humour and fun for others,” said Bill Taylor, who has been involved with the school’s improv and drama program for 25 years.
He said the improv program helps develop creativity, teamwork, mental flexibility and thinking. “Improvisation develops an individual’s imagination and ability to generate new ideas,” Taylor said. “It’s an avenue for the young people to create a situation that is fun, and they can create any situation to solve it, whether it’s real or not.”
Taylor said the LSS team keeps in mind that it’s competing, and will set out to win another Vancouver Island title and make another trip to nationals in Ottawa.
“But we also have to make sure that the experience is fun…” he said. “It’s more important that the team and all its members have a fun time learning.”
All three of this week’s shows start at 7 p.m. with doors at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10.
