The Arts Council of Ladysmith and District is ready to unveil the latest exhibition at its new gallery.

Starting on Wednesday, Aug. 2, the arts council is opening the doors to their gallery for a members’ exhibition called Travel.

The exhibit will feature approximately 60 art pieces, from drawings and paintings to sculptures and photos from dozens of new and returning local artists.

“[The exhibit] allows our artists to explore different areas around the world, maybe they are travellers themselves and they have incorporated some of the things that they’ve seen into their artwork,” said Francesca Reside, the council’s media director. “But it also could be the fact that they traveled on the Island itself. So people can definitely come into the gallery for this exhibition, see places from afar, but also local areas that really are treasures.”

Travel is the third exhibition the arts council has showed in the new gallery in downtown Ladysmith on High Street, which opened in June with the Happiness exhibit. Reside said the first exhibits was a success with plenty of visitors, both local and tourists, and she said the arts council sold 10 or more pieces every exhibit.

“We are having such a great response from people who are coming into the space,” she said. “They either didn’t know that we existed, or they’re just waiting for us to have a space that is more central, so we’ve had really great comments [from] people coming in saying ‘I’m so happy you’re here,’ then spending a lot of time in the gallery.”

Travel will be free to attend from Aug. 2 to Aug. 27 and the gallery will be open from Wednesdays to Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
