A Ladysmith student art show is intended to celebrate the creativity of youth.
The Ladymisth Student Art Show, organized by the Arts Council of Ladysmith, features 193 paintings, drawings, photos and sculptures made by art students of all ages, even kindergarteners.
“Every child is an artist, the only problem is staying an artist when you grow up, and not losing that creativity,” said Josslyn Meyers, partly quoting Picasso at the opening of the art show on Saturday, April 1.
Meyers, a fine arts instructor and guest speaker at the grand opening, described the show as “the best student show ever” because it’s “just so colourful and beautiful and full of creativity.”
Artists used multiple styles and subject matters throughout the show, from abstract photography to realistic drawings “expressing deep emotions and really deep concepts,” according to Meyers, who has multiple art students who entered their own work.
The arts council believes youths are especially important to the arts community, and shows like these are crucial.
“Giving [youths] a voice, a platform to show their vision of the world, it’s a pretty powerful thing,” said Shannon Delaney, education coordinator of the arts council. “As you’ve heard today, teachers and adults in their life are inspired by their unique way of seeing.”
The show is open from Monday to Friday until April 12 at the Waterfront Gallery.
