Strong skating produces results at regional competition

Dandy dozen from Fuller Lake makes an impact on the ice

Twelve members of the Fuller Lake Skating Club made the most of their time in the spotlight during the Vancouver Island region championships Feb. 2-4 at the Archie Browning Sports Centre in Victoria.

The weekend started strong with outstanding achievements at the Star 2 level, with Isla Fink (silver, freeskate and silver, elements); Quinn Montgomery (gold, freeskate and gold elements); Caitlin Varcoe (silver, freeskate and silver, elements); Naomi Ferguson (bronze, freeskate and bronze, elements); Ella Donovan (silver, freeskate and gold, elements); and Ella Stuart (silver, freeskate and gold, elements).

Senior members Micha Torres Hernandez and Brooklyn Puska were on the ice the second day in Star 7 freeskate and Gold Artistic events, respectively. Torres Hernandez placed ninth in the Star 7 freeskate while Puska finished just off the podium in fourth place in Gold Artistic.

The action began again early the final day for Torres Hernandez and Puska. They both competed in the Star 8 freeskate, where Torres Hernandez earned a fifth place and Puska took sixth.

Tea Searle also competed that day, placing sixth in the Star 4 Girls Under 13.

The final Fuller Lake skater, Alex Jensen, was all gold. He finished first in Star 4 Boys and first in Star 4 Elements.

All the skaters did the club proud. Their success at the prestigious event is a testament to the hard work at practice during the course of the year and to the outstanding guidance from head coach Kailee Bowman and club coach Jessica Griffiths.

The skaters hope to build on their successes when they travel to Kelowna for the 2024 B.C.-Yukon Super Series final March 7-10.
