To the editor,

2023 was the hottest year on record. The unprecedented wildfire season we suffered through was just one frightening result of the fossil fuel-driven overheating of our planet.

But the world’s renewable energy capacity grew at record pace in 2023 too, and that gives me tremendous hope. China led the way last year, bringing online as much solar power as the rest of the world combined. What’s Canada’s excuse? Every level of government should be working together to accelerate our energy transition in 2024.

Cheap, clean, renewable energy is the key to a better future. Despite the protests of the few remaining deniers, the shift away from fossil fuels will make life more affordable for everyday people, not less. Good climate policy can unlock that affordability potential, create good jobs across the country, and make sure no one gets left behind. Let’s demand nothing less.
