Celebration needs new party planners

The Ladysmith Celebrations committee needs a reason to be a little more jubilant.

The Ladysmith Celebrations committee needs a reason to be a little more jubilant.

Lisa Mates, outgoing president, said the committee is in desperate need of some new members and volunteers or we risk losing Ladysmith Days.

“We’re in dire straits right now,” said Mates.

Mates said most of the core people are leaving the committee for other things and four or five people need to step up and save the festival and soon.

Mates said the festival is important part of local culture.

“It’s Ladysmith Days! It’s been around for 42-43 years,” said Mates.

Mates said she has spoken to people who have never been a part of the committee but have said the festival is a huge part of their summer.

Mates said the festival draws lots of people from around the Island to Ladysmith.

The Ladysmith Credit Union is a big sponsor, said Mates, as they fund the fireworks and kids’ activities.

The kids activities, she said, are always a big draw as there is lots to do and it’s all free.

“The fireworks are pretty spectacular,” said Mates.

“For a small town to put on a fireworks display like that, it’s amazing.”

Mates said she was disappointed with the turnout of the last meeting and the committee had to postpone their AGM from December to January.
