Ladysmith’s signature disaster aid program is not just there to help in times of flooding, or earthquake.

War time counts too.

On April 1, 2022 Disaster Aid Canada shipped 50 family-sized disaster response tents for delivery to Poland for refugees seeking to escape the war in Ukraine. Total value exceeds $25,000 for the tents alone. Disaster Aid Canada is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ladysmith and operates out of Ladysmith.

Spokesperson Gerry Beltgens said Ladysmith Rotary Club thanks all of the people who supported its Shredding for Ukraine fundraiser on April 2, at Ladysmith Senior Secondary.

The club raised more than $4,200 from the fundraiser and voted to donate another $3,000 from club funds to the Ukraine refugee relief effort.

Half of the shredding money will go to Disaster Aid Canada and the balance will go to the Rotary International Disaster Relief Program for a total of over $32,000.

Contributions to the Rotary International Disaster Response Fund received by 30 April 2022 qualify for use in support of the Ukrainian relief efforts. Rotary districts can apply for expedited disaster response grants to provide relief to refugees or other victims of the war in Ukraine including items such as water, food, shelter, medicine, and clothing at the My Rotary disaster response website.
