Three hundred kids of all ages enjoyed an outdoor screening of Zootopia, their blankets spread out on the amphitheater grass at Second Ave. and High Street Aug. 23.
Coun. Rob Hutchins pointed out that this was the fourth year families have participated in the fun event, which is also a Tour de Rock fundraiser, put on by the Town of Ladysmith’s council.
As well as an entertaining movie, the audience enjoyed the traditional movie and event goer’s fare of popcorn and hot dogs.
They also got to learn a few things about fire fighting and fire safety.
“Part of the evening is a chance to climb around on a fire truck” Coun. Duck Paterson said.
“The fire and rescue department come down with their equipment and let the kids have a good time and ask questions.”
It was also a chance to parents to learn more about fire smarting their homes, and the benefit of smoke detectors, Paterson said.
Donations from Save-on-Foods and Home Hardware helped keep costs for the event low, which meant all the money raised could go toward the Tour de Rock fight against childhood cancer.
Tour de Rock sets off from Port Alice Sept. 24, passes through Ladysmith Oct. 3, and winds up in Victoria Oct. 7.
“We were able to do the whole evening by donation and over $800 was raised,” said Paterson.
