New committee changes Ladysmith Days’ date

The ‘make-or-break meeting’ for Ladysmith Days was held on Thursday, Feb. 3.

There had been considerable concern regarding the future of this great family event, as previous meetings have not had enough volunteers.

At the meeting, more than 20 people showed up expressing a strong desire to see the event continue.

Barry Frech is the newly elected president with Stacey Anderson elected vice-president. The secretary is Heidi Frech and Rob McIntyre is the new treasurer.

Melody Smythies and Darlene Kelt are the newly elected directors, completing the new board of the Ladysmith Days Celebration Society.

The biggest change, however, is the date. After much discussion, the past and new committee felt that the August long-weekend was not as successful as it should be.

Not only was it difficult for the Celebrations Society to get citizens to volunteer their time, but also the Kinsmen sponsored parade, held on the Saturday, was getting noticeably smaller and the entire crowd coming out to watch and participate has been dwindling in the past few years.

The Celebrations Committee voted to move the Ladysmith Days weekend to Saturday, Aug. 13 and Sunday, Aug. 14, in the hopes of Ladysmith Days returning to what it used to be… and that is a huge fun, family weekend that all citizens of Ladysmith and the surrounding areas can enjoy.

The committee is always open to new volunteers and new ideas and invite anybody willing to help out to attend their next meeting on Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m. at Ladysmith City Hall.
