An ad published in the April 30 edition of the Ladysmith Chronicle incorrectly stated that Stage 3 restrictions are in effect. Only Stage 2 Water Restrictions are in effect as of May 1, 2020.
Stage 2 Water Restrictions are being introduced on Friday, May 1 for the Town of Ladysmith, Stz’uminus First Nation, and the Diamond Improvement District. Restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.
Typically, Stage 1 Water Restrictions are introduced at the beginning of may. In a press release, the Town of Ladysmith said changes in historical weather patterns are causing the Town to manage water resources more carefully.
Ladysmith and area has experienced dry weather since the beginning of mid-February. The trend of lower precipitation is consistent with recent years and total rainfall for April 2020 is below historical averages.
The commissioning of the new Water Filtration Plant and resulting increase in water use has in part led to the Town’s decision to move to Stage 2 earlier this year.
Water data also shows that residential consumption has trended higher in recent weeks, likely as a result of more people self-isolating at home during COVID-19.
As a result of Stage 2 Water Restrictions, residents are encouraged to follow water regulation guidelines posted to the Town of Ladysmith’s website. Water restrictions typically remain in place until October 31.
At this time, lawn sprinkling is permitted between 7:00 am - 9:00 am or 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Watering new lawns is not permitted. Hand water of trees, shrubs, and gardens is permitted between 7:00 am - 9:00 am or 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm for a maximum of two hours per day. Micro or drip irrigation is permitted any time for a maximum of four hours per day. Filling pools and hot tubs, as well as the washing of vehicles, houses, boats, RV’s and trailers is permitted any time. Washing driveways and sidewalks is not permitted.
