The Ladysmith Waterfront Gallery has once again decorated 1st Avenue with poppies painted in their Poppy Project program.

The Poppy Project began in 2019. ART SPLASH — an art program run by the Waterfront Gallery — was the first group to paint poppies, creating 32 in total. This year — due to COVID-19 — seven local artists designed the poppies. All seven artists wore masks and observed public health guidance while creating the poppies.
“Every one of them is different,” Ladysmith Arts Council president, Kathy Holmes said. “Even members from the Legion came and painted some.”
Stine Hjort and Bill Drysdale helped cut the wood for the poppies. The wood was donated by Colonia Gardens.
The Legion is going to put tags on the Poppies. Individuals can contact the Legion, and have the name of a veteran placed on one of the poppies for a donation to the Legion Poppy Campaign.
“People were thrilled with [the poppies],” Holmes said. “I think it’s just an amazing idea.”
