In celebration of the fourth annual Construction and Skilled Trades Month, the British Columbia Construction Association has launched the Lunch Box Challenge to support local restaurants.
“Our industry was declared essential throughout the pandemic, and while it’s been a tough year, we’re proud of how well we’ve done and keen to give the workforce a bit of recognition,” BCCA President, Chris Atchison said. “We’re grateful that we were able to keep working. The restaurant industry hasn’t been so fortunate, so it’s good to do a little something to help the local restaurants who are also working hard in every community.”
The BCCA has offered 100 grants totalling $37,500 to encourage construction employers to get their crews a free lunch from local restaurants.
On April 2, Westmark Construction provided lunch for their crew working on a 96-unit apartment building in Ladysmith.

The crew was treated to sandwiches, salads and soups from In The Beantime Cafe. Beantime owner Campbell McIntyre said that the catering order from Westmark was huge for his business, especially in light of recent public health orders that restrict indoor dining.

“It really helps out,” McIntyre said. “It’s great to know that there’s some initiatives out there to support restaurants because everybody’s eating it pretty hard right now.
