Parts of Vancouver Island are without power as some of the Malahat section of the Trans-Canada Highway remains slushy after a fall storm brought heavy rain, snow and wind overnight Tuesday.
Late Tuesday, high winds and heavy rains caused damage that saw 6,000 customers on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands without power.
“All available crews are working to make repairs and restore power. Due to the extent of damage and the number of outages, we expect some customers in the hardest-hit areas without power overnight,” BC Hydro said in a statement. “This includes customers on the Southern Gulf Islands. Additional crews will arrive on the first ferries in the morning to aid restoration efforts.

Environment Canada issued a new rainfall warning for the region Wednesday with 60 mm expected from Goldstream through to Nanaimo.
“A low-pressure system moved past the B.C. south coast overnight. Rain has begun to ease over the region, however, periods of heavy rain are possible this morning as the system continues to move away and weaken,” the statement reads.
