Police have identified a body found Monday near Duncan as that of David William Moir, 51.

Positive identification of the affable, heavy-set Duncanite was made following an autopsy in Nanaimo on Wednesday.

That examination happened after a passerby found human remains near Somenos Marsh on May 2.

Foul play isn’t suspected, though Moir’s exact cause of death is under review by the coroner, explained Const. Markus Lueder of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.

“He was not done in,” said Lueder, who knew the former Warmland Shelter resident who disappeared on Oct. 3.

“David had some complex medical issues and those contributed to his death.”

Moir’s family has been notified of the tragedy, said Lueder.

He said he is not sure where the family lives, or af any plans for a service.

“Dave was a good guy. If you spent any time in the downtown area, you knew Dave.

“He was a friendly guy who was never confrontational with police,” he said.

Police distributed photos of Moir to Cowichan Search-and-Rescue members who scoured the river after Moir went missing.
