Employers throughout Nanaimo—Ladysmith are being encouraged by MP Sheila Malcolmson to apply for federal funding to employ youth next summer.
The deadline to apply has been pushed up to January 20, 2017.
Applicants approved for funding will be able to hire students as early as April, 2017.
“In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, this expanded Canada Summer Jobs program will help our young people find new job opportunities and gain valuable work experience,” Malcolmson said.
“At the same time, employers will be able to expand their summer workforce with little or no extra cost.”
In 2016, the program helped fund 91,153 hours of employment in Nanaimo—Ladysmith.
The Canada Summer Jobs 2017 program will allow all not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses with up to 50 employees to apply for funding from the Government of Canada. The program subsidizes summer jobs for full-time students aged 15 to 30 years old.
Not-for-profit employers like museums and community organizations can receive up to 100 per cent of the minimum wage and mandatory employment-related costs, while public-sector employers and small businesses can receive up to 50 per cent.
