B.C. Wildfire Service crews were on scene in rural Ladysmith on Friday morning working to contain a 0.3 hectare human-caused blaze in the area of Mt. Hall.

Several reports of the wildfire were received by the Coastal Fire Centre overnight Thursday and flames were still visible as of early this morning.

Spokesperson Marg Drysdale confirmed to the Chronicle that the fire is human caused and “burning at ankle height.”

“It is some roadside debris that was set on fire. Crews are on site. The fire is not moving and is not affecting any values at this time,” she said.

The Town of Ladysmith said the rural fire was west of Mt. Hall and that there was no risk to the public.

Two initial crews of six firefighters are working to extinguish the fire and it was expected to be out by end of day.

An investigation will also be conducted today and any evidence related to the arson will be passed along the Ladysmith RCMP.
