Is fair taxation an oxymoron or a possibility?

Nanaimo-North Cowichan MLA Doug Routley is sponsoring a town hall meeting tomorrow (March 29) at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo.

"Income tax season is upon us, and what better time to reflect on the role that taxation plays in our lives," Routley says in a press release. "Citizens will have the opportunity to have a civic and civil conversation about what a fair and workable tax system should look like at a town hall on March 29 at Vancouver Island University."

The workshop is free and is open to everyone, regardless of political affiliation. It will take place at 7 p.m. in Room 211 at Building 355.

The basics of taxation  — what it is, why we have it, how it works, different kinds of taxation — will first be outlined by economist Bob Ages. Ages has extensive experience conducting public education sessions on the economy and has been assisting the Occupy movement.

After a brief question-and-answer period, small breakout groups will then explore purposes, underlying principles and tax tools that might be best for B.C. and Canada. General discussion will follow.
