Ladysmith Fire Rescue is reminding people to be cautious when cooking after a stove top incident in an apartment last week and another at the Rialto Building on Wednesday night.

Firefighters were called to the apartment complex on First Avenue shortly before 11:30 p.m. after smoke was reported coming from one of the units.

Fire Chief Ray Delcourt said a resident was cooking hamburger meat when he either fell unconscious or possibly asleep.

“He was on the floor when one of the other tenants in the apartment checked through his window and saw he was laying on the floor,” Delcourt said. “The guy called him and he woke up and went to unlock his door before he stumbled again and then was unconscious for a while.”

There was no fire damage to the unit but smoke had filled in the unit and into the hallway by the time firefighters arrived on scene.

Paramedics assessed the man for smoke inhalation and a possible head injury sustained during the fall.

Delcourt is reminding people to be aware as many stove top fires are preventable.

“Be aware when you have something on your stove and don’t leave it unattended,” he said.
