A few dozen people came together at the corner of Gatacre Street and First Avenue on Monday night as the Town of Ladysmith officially open its new rainbow crosswalk.
“The success of any community is contingent upon leadership which serves, appreciates, respects and values the variety of differences that exist in a shared community,” said Mayor Aaron Stone.
“Today we are here to promote diversity and inclusion as strengths to be encouraged and celebrated and to discourage discrimination based on race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status and other factors which would deny the essential humanity of all people.”
Ladysmith had been exploring possibilities of where to install a rainbow crosswalk in town following a delegation by Nanaimo Pride Society at city council last fall.
A staff report including the costing and annual maintenance was approved at a council meeting earlier this month.
