Learn all about organic food waste collection in North Cowichan

The Municipality of North Cowichan is hosting workshops in April to educate residents about how the Kitchen Pitch-In program works.

The Municipality of North Cowichan is rolling out its "Kitchen Pitch-In" organics collection program May 1 and is hosting a series of open houses in April to get people ready for the change.

Chemainus area residents can interact with staff and learn about the materials used in the new “North Cowichan Kitchen Pitch-In” Organics Collection Program, such as the green bin, kitchen container, various bin liners, and examples of what items are accepted and are not accepted in the program.

The new weekly Kitchen Organics Collection Program will enable residents to easily dispose of household organic material, such as food waste and soiled paper products. Green organics bins with start-up kits will be delivered, starting April 2, to all households that receive curbside waste collection. Delivery of the green bins should be complete by April 21.

Inside the green bin residents will find a kitchen container, a program guide that explains how to participate in the program, a large decal that lists acceptable and unacceptable materials, and some sample certified compostable bags.

The Chemainus open house will be held Thurs., April 5, from 3-7 p.m. at the Chemainus Legion Hall (9775 Chemainus Rd.).
