A Nanaimo woman has been charged with breaking into a church and stealing an espresso machine worth thousands.
The break-in at the Oceanside International Church on Jingle Pot Road happened Aug. 30 and one of the more significant items stolen was an espresso coffee machine that cost $10,000, according to a Nanaimo RCMP press release.
The investigation into the break-in led police to a north Nanaimo home “known for criminal activity” where they spotted an individual wanted on several warrants.
“As expected, this person took off running on foot and although pursued by officers, she was not located,” the release noted.
Police obtained a search warrant for the residence, however, and later that day, stolen goods had been located and sufficient evidence was gathered to charge Penny Raines, 61, with breaking and entering.
Along with the expensive espresso machine, police also located a 60-inch TV, loudspeakers, security cameras and various other items. All of the items were returned to the church. An older model Jeep Cherokee was also seized.
Raines’s next court appearance is scheduled for sometime in January.
